Protests and Discontent in Canada

Updated: Jan 13, 2022

In Canada recently the Wet'suwet'en first nation has once again resorted to blocking the roads this time endangering the lives of 500 Coastal Gaslink workers over violating Indigenous land rights and giving the Federal government of Canada a bad look for not dealing with this sooner. As I previously mentioned in one of my blog posts the lack of action by the federal government and provincial government of British Columbia during the first protest which shut down the nation and address all issues does not give a great image of Canada especially an oil company. Instead, it would have me want to invest elsewhere in the world where the government would respect stand up for me and pay attention to the economic growth I bring to the nation and the thousands of jobs that could come with it. I agree that moving to more green energy is a good thing but the government also needs to work with oil companies who could help bring that change and transition to helping produce creative ways to capture greenhouse gas and not jeopardize the laying off of thousands of workers.

This brings me to the two topics that I want to talk about in this short blog that describes the unrest that is going on in Canada caused by some really bad choices by the Federal Liberal party of Canada. First, I would like to mention that I agree that people should have the right to protest and make their views known to the government but should not be at the cost of the lives of people who have nothing to do with the protest. Canada is a democratic society and the federal and provincial government provide social assistance programs to people who need to access them whether they have a disability, difficulty making enough income, or are military veteran who has to deal with psychological issues. Historical protests have been similar to the protests like you see the Wet'suwet'en first nation has started although one of the most famous ones that occurred in Russia had to do with the rights of the citizens who at that time were still ruled by a monarch who did not give them basic rights. This would turn into a full-scale revolution that would see the Czar and his family killed by the hands of the eventual communist party who would rule Russia with an iron grip until 1989 when the communist regime finally collapsed. Although I don't think we are close to a full revolution in Canada from different people who are not happy with the government from first nation peoples to the western half of Canada feeling that they are being betrayed by the federal government for not paying attention to them.

The Wet'suwet'en people are not the only ones who feel betrayed by the federal government. Leading the province of Saskatchewan is premier Moe, who wants to give his province greater autonomy over oil and gas emissions. There was no consultation with provinces and territories by the leader of the federal Liberal party about his plan to cap greenhouse emissions. As reported by CBC, the choice to become more autonomous would affect 16% of the GDP and impact the lives of about 30,000 families in Saskatchewan. It is claimed by the opposition party in Saskatchewan, the New Democrat Party, that this is being used as a distraction to hide the high number of cases of COVID-19 that are getting out of control in the province.

It seems that the current Liberal government is facing a crisis out west with the illegal protests that keep occurring in British Columbia when provinces demand greater autonomy over how the resources they have are used and moved around the world. I think it might be time for the other federal parties in Ottawa to step up and send us into another election to get rid of Justin Trudeau and the Liberals who continue to fumble around and have no economic plan to speak of. Instead, they would rather go behind the backs of provinces to agree to Greenhouse gas terms that are not realistic at all or to finally wake up and come up with a strategy that benefits all people instead of the imaginary people that the Liberal party claim that they are talking to. This needs to end if Canada is to become a valuable nation to the global economy and avoid protests like the ones seen in Russia or the ones seen on Capital hill around Donald Trump claiming that the election he lost was rigged by the democrats.

Some excellent points in your blog. If Trudeau were to be replaced who do you see in his place? O'Toole? Singh? Freeland? And why would they be better?

Replying to

I don't think Erin O'Toole was the right person to lead the Conservative party at that time. He was to much of an unknown politician who randomly appeared which helped lead to his downfall. Although he was better then Andrew Sheer who just attacked Justin Trudeau then never explained his plan.
